Curator

If I were to carefully examine my life I'd probably discover that I've been responsible for many curations. I'm fairly sure I've even listed some of them eslewhere on my voluminous websites but I'm not sure where at the moment. I've started this particular page because I've decided to make some of the movie curations available to select people on a Private basis via YouTube. The 1st one I'll be listing here is my 8 volume, 16 hour, compilation of animations that I put together for my friend etta cetera. This curation has never been presented publicly but I think it should be. People interested in checking out these curations can email me at idioideo at gmail dot com & try to convince me that you're worthy. - September 24, 2021 note from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE

ANIMATIONS

Sometime between 1999 & 2004 I compiled an 8 volume, 16 hour compilation of VHS tapes with animations that I selected from my multitudinous aRCHIVE. I did this for my dear friend etta cetera who'd expressed an interest. Admiitedly, the quality varies given that in some instances the film-to-video transfers were ones I did myself taking films from the library & projecting them with my cheap 16mm projector & reshooting them off the screen with an even more primitive video camera. Nonetheless, I think that the resultant collection is essentially one-of-a-kind - representing work from a broad variety of sources & styles, mixing together well-known & obscure animators. There is no other animation curation like this one. - tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE

Unfortunately, 3 copyright claims have been laid against my Private posting of this available to 2 people: myself & one friend. My inclusion of the Brothers Quay's "Rehearsal for Extinct Anatomies" has led to a blocking of the entire collection as has my inclusion of Harry Smith's "Early Abstraction 10". Strictly speaking, the presence of Tieji Ito's soundtrack for the latter is what's led to the copyright claim. Ironically, when Smith originally presented these films he just put records on as soundtrack - including, for example, The Beatles. If he were alive & were to do that on YouTube his entire work would be blocked. Most likely, the company 'owning' Ito's soundtrack placed it with the Smith film in order to create copyright control where they wouldn't've been able to otherwise. I've removed the Brothers Quay's "Rehearsal for Extinct Anatomies" & Ito's soundtrack for Harry Smith's "Early Abstraction 10". Even though I like Ito's work, its inclusion as soundtrack was superfluous. A claim was also made against the use of Norman McLaren's "Boogie-Doodle" but, since the work originated in Canada instead of the United States, the capitalism of the claim isn't so extreme. In this case the "Video cannot be monetized". Since none of the many hundreds of movies of my own that're on YouTube are monetized I had no intention of monetizing something by someone else either. Maybe the 'owners' of Norman McLaren's copyright were sensible that he's using a musical work by Albert Ammons, the copyright to which they may not 'own'. Let it be understood that my purpose in curating this work & making the curation available is to both show what I think is GREAT work & to show the greatness of my aRCHIVE. Unlike the businesses that're contesting my use of the material, it's not my intention to get rich off it. Of course, I still recommend the excluded work highly & assume that, thanks to the businesses, it's easily available commercially & through libraries.

Unfortunately, 4 copyright claims have been laid against my Private posting of this available to 2 people: myself & one friend. My inclusion of the Brothers Quay's "Little Songs of the Chief Officer of Hunar Louse - or the Unnameable Little Broom" has led to a blocking of the entire collection. Hence, I've removed the Brothers Quay work entirely. Because of 3 audio pieces this curation is also marked as "Video cannot be monetized". The 3 pieces are "Date with Disaster" by The C*nts (actual name The Cunts), "The End" by the Doors, & Henk Badings's "Cain and Abel". As I recall, a member of The Cunts sent me a copy of this single in the 1980s in trade for something of mine. In my film, I show the single & play some of the record to accompany the visual. Given that my film is a mostly single-frame-shot + continual dissolves 27:45 super-8 film, this inclusion of The Cunts is a very small part of the overall project. As for "The End" & "Cain and Abel"? Well, I don't remember which movies use these pieces, I don't think I used them in my film. I'm informed that "Copyright claim found. The copyright owner is allowing you to use the claimed content and will run ads on your video." Since none of the many hundreds of movies of my own that're on YouTube are monetized I have no intention of monetizing something by someone else either. If the people claiming copyright actually run ads at any point throught this collection I'll try removing the claimed material - starting with the brief Cunts section. I hope I don't have to resort to doing that.

As is now typical as I try to put these animation collections online, there're copyright claims: 2 from Frank Zappa, both, presumably, for "Nite School" although that's a little unclear to me, & one from Bruce Gilbert for his song entitled "Work For Do You Me? I Did (1 & 2)". I have no idea who Bruce Gilbert is or which movie that piece is in. It's threatened that they'll run ads. I don't want any ads spoiling the overall quality but I'm curious to see how this plays out. If they actually run ads the 1 or 2 times anyone looks at this, I may remove "Nite School" altogether. I'm not sure what to do about the Gilbert, whatever it is. Since none of the many hundreds of movies of my own that're on YouTube are monetized I have no intention of monetizing something by someone else either. As is now typical as I try to put these animation collections online, there're copyright claims, in this case a whopping EIGHT, no, make that NINE, 3 of them of the blocking type. It seems that these claims are representative of what I call Artificial Unintelligence: poorly functioning algorithms. E.G.: Eith Piaf's "N'y va pas Manuel (2012 Remastered)" is obviously incorrect because I would've assembled this compilation no later than 2004 which means that the 2012 remastering would not apply. Piaf is used in "Lights Before Dawn". It's my ongoing impression that these copyright claimaints are simply grasping for whatever monetary opportunity they can create, without much concern, certainly, for the person who originally created the work, many of whom are long-since dead. The 3 that prevent any witnessing of the entire thing I'll just trim out: "Karussell" by Wolf Maahn, which I don't even see on the above list so I'm not even sure what that is [the section to be trimmed is from 1:30:05 to 1:32:52 - that's the middle of "78 Tours" but I'll just trim it anyway - although in the "trim preview" the section to be removed is the end of "78 Tours" & the beginning of "Lights Before Dawn" which makes even less sense - "78 Tours" seems to've had the beginning cut off but "Lights Before Dawn" seems complete]; Bill Plympton's "Your Face" (this is the main one I expected b/c Plympton was pushed so hard for awhile - once again, though, the trim offered is during the piece before it from "The Bedroom" - I just use their automatic trim function but I don't know whether it works or not & whether the 2 instances that I've cited will malfunction & destroy afjacent pieces), The Looney Tunes's "Gonzales Tamales". 5 of the remaining 6 claims are for music; the other claim is for an entire movie: "Vykrytasi" which I find translated from Slovak to English as "Uncovered". Perhaps that's one of the sections of "Animated Self Portraits" since Svankmajer is a Czech filmmaker. I'm not sure. All 6 say that the "Video cannot be monetized", which is fine with me since I have no intention of monetizing it anyway. If there's a threat of ads running I haven't seen it. If anyone watching this compilation, at this point only one person other than myself, sees ads please let me know & I'll try to get rid of them. Since none of the many hundreds of movies of my own that're on YouTube are monetized I have no intention of monetizing something by someone else either. [I had to cut off "& assume that, thanks to the businesses, it's easily available commercially & through libraries" from the last sentence b/c I exceeded the text limit.]
