TESTES-3 logbook
On January 24, 1979, The International Dateman, Sumu Pretzler, & I (tentatively, a convenience) anonymously launched TESTES-3, a phone number in Baltimore that people could call for somewhat unpredictable interactions. The idea was to create a participatory media.
People could call the phone number & hear an outgoing message tape on an answering machine & be recorded after the beep. Since answering machines were still fairly new at the time, not many people knew what they were or understood when the recording happened.
TESTES-3 helped spawn what we called "B.U.T.N." ("Baltimore Underground Telephone Network" &/or "BalTimOre Underground Telepheremone Network" etc) which came to consist of 8 different numbers that could be called fordifferent experiences.
After making 154 outgoing message tapes, mostly culled from the incoming material, we changed from TESTES-3 to VD-RADIO after June 21, 1979. I made 118 of those tapes. I also kept a logbook. The following scans are of that copied decades later after mold had partially rotted some pages. Still, serious researchers might fight this very interesting.
