The Philosopher's Union was proposed by London-based thinker Stefan Szczelkun - probably sometime in the mid 1980s. He mentioned the idea to John Berndt, who was visiting from BalTimOre, & John passed the idea along to me - probably in early 1988. I had recently purchased a PXL-2000 'Pixelvision' toy camcorder that recorded low-fidelity Black & White images & noisy sound onto audio cassette tapes - each 90 minute tape yielding 5:50 of video per side.
Since the PXL has 'infinite focus' & is, therefore, as 'in focus' close-up as it is wide-angle, I decided to further the Philosopher's Union proposal by initiating a proposed series of 50,000 close-ups of the mouths of people talking about their philosophies. This project was received with some enthusiasm by friends of mine. I shot 46 (my PXL is long since broken so it's hard to predict whether I'll shoot any more), Laura A. Trueseal shot 10, Uncle An shot 9, Randy George McWilliams shot 4, 3 were shot by someone connected to John Eaton, 1 was shot (not using the PXL) by Florian Cramer, & it's possible that others were made that I've never witnessed. Hopefully, they'll be posted online eventually.
The purpose of this web-page is to provide an index that gathers together links to online manifestations of the Philosopher's Union. It will, no doubt remain incomplete but will still possibly yield more coherence than an ordinary search might. - December 19, 2014 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
