1990. More News of the Weird
I thought News of the Weird was pretty interesting when I 1st saw it. I didn't necessarily see it as another version of The Darwin Awards, awards for losers. I saw it as a place to learn about truly interesting people, some of them just failed criminals, others, like Lawnchair Larry, people that I'd actually like to meet. An ex-girlfriend was even in it a decade or so after I was.
Alas, it deteriorated pretty fast. Apparently nude guys who beat dead dogs in train tunnels are in short supply in contrast to people who leave behind their driver's licenses after robbing convenience stores (or whatever). At one point I even wrote to the News of the Weird folks & proposed that they sponsor a convention of some of the more interseting weirdos. They didn't reply. Lately, I've noticed that they seem to be trying for fewer failed criminals but I don't pay much attention to it anymore.
This, of course, is just typical 'yellow journalism'. There's no attempt whatsoever to be accurate or to tell the truth. People weren't "chanting" or holding "torches". I didn't say that "the incident was a ritual perfomed by members of a local cult" & my name is written "tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE". Who cares, right? 'A weirdo like this will never sue' is probably their reasoning.
