1991. Neoist Manifestos / The Art Strike Papers
Before, during, & after this book came out, I felt like one of Neoism's strong points was its having few or no manifestos. That was one of the things that kept it hard to define. Then Stewart came along & created manifestos because he knew that that's what the public wanted. He didn't particularly care about what other Neoists wanted, he had a career to pursue.
This book is a double: flip it & "The Art Strike Papers" start from the other side. I didn't have anything in the "Manifestos" half but I did, under the name of Tim Ore, in the "Art Strike" half.
Stewart was plagiarizing Gustav Metzger & Henry Flynt when he proposed the Art Strike. I had criticisms of the idea to the effect that, basically, it reinforced art more than it denied it. Nonetheless, it was an interesting provocation that stirred up quite a bit of discourse & I was happy about that.
My full text was actually in 2 parts. The 2nd part was written under the name of "E.G. Head". I thought the whole piece was more interesting, more convoluted, & funnier - but Stewart chose to just use the 1st half. That part alone was enough to lead to a subscriber to the original publication that it appeared in unsubscribing in disgust & anger. It seems that they didn't realize that it was more than a little tongue-in-cheek.
