My friend from BalTimOre, Ruth Turner, had moved to Spain & was cocurating a show on "members", i.e.: genitalia. I contributed a 2 hour VHS tape called "Teaser" meant to be looped that was back-to-back repetitions of a short shot of my cock starting to enter my girlfriend's vagina & then popping out before penetrating very far.
For the catalog, I submitted a piece I'd made in early 1980 shortly after contracting herpes called "I've been bitten by the love-bug: HSV-2". The piece is a picture of my naked crotch with "HSV2" written in braille on the image of my penis. Since herpes manifests itself as clusters of bumps it seemed appropriate to use the bumps of braille. This is what I call a "Concrete Essay". I think it's funny.
In my correspondence with Ruth I insisted that the catalog had to have the braille & I sent her a braille writer. She fervently assured me that she would definitely hand-punch every copy of the catalog even though it would render the backside of the page problematic for other use.
The exhibit happened, 1st on mainland Spain & then on the Canary Islands. Ruth claimed that "Teaser" was shown openly in both places. I got the catalog & wasn't particularly surprised that: there was no braille, my explanatory text wasn't there, there was no Spanish translation, & my name was written wrong. She returned the braille writer without its pen.
It was still a great catalog anyway.
