1996. the improvisor
I was lucky enough to get my 2nd record reviewed in the last hard-copy issue of "The Improvisor - The International Journal of Free Improvisation" before it went online. I was also lucky enough to have the review be written by its editor, LaDonna Smith.
I'd witnessed Smith perform with her partner of the time, Davey Williams, twice in Baltimore in the late '70s. They were excellent & these performances were amongst the earliest improvising performances by anyone other than myself I ever got a chance to be an audience for.
Alas, later, I also sent 4 other recordings of mine to the 4 Improvisor reviewers who were listed at the time. Only one of them bothered to write a review &, unlike Smith, he was blatantly hostile & only apparently listened to the 1st minute or so before writing his very short 'review'. That soured me on ever bothering to try to get reviewed there again.
I'm happy to say that I finally got a chance to play with LaDonna Smith at Garfield Artworks in Pittsburgh as part of a Jefferson Presents event on January 27, 2007, as part of an "Improvised Sound / Improvised Film" event.
