1999. Robert Beck Memorial Cinema
I got this spiral-bound collection of posters & other ephemera from early 1998 to late 1999 in the mail with a note from November 10, 1999. It was sent to me by Brian Frye who was the filmmaker who had arranged for me to give a screening at the Collective Unconscious in New York City on September 29, 1998.
Typically, people who have an interest in relatively esoteric things like underground experimental moviemaking tend to be dedicated & enthusiastic & really fun to be around. That screening exemplified this. I remember having an excellent time of a type that I could use much more of. It's also indicative of this enthusiasm that Brian took the trouble to make a copy of this for me & to send it to me. THANK YOU, BRIAN!
This was the beginning of a cross-country tour I went on with my girlfriend of the time, the fabulous etta cetera. It was the ONLY tour I've ever been on where I broke even & that was only because etta split the expenses with me. I usually lose money.
The 3 images below are of 2 posters for the screening using 2 publicity stills I made for 2 of my 16mm films - followed by my 'set list', the list of movies I screened. Having given hundreds of screenings around the world I rarely have any record of what I showed. As such, this 'set list' is a valuable record for me of what I typically screened while on this tour.
I'm not sure how many copies of this bk were made but I imagine that everyone whose work is represented somehow + whoever was associated w/ the Robert Beck Memorial Cinema (named after a man who was deaf & mute until he went to a movie) & the Collective Unconscious. I also don't know whether the Beck lasted beyond the dating limits of this bk. I imagine they were short-lived but I could be wrong. At any rate, it's been a long time since I've heard anything about them.
