Top 100 Composers: Dubravko Detoni

I seem to feel a special affinity with some Eastern European culture - especially that of Czechoslovakia, Hungary, & Yugolavia. I associate these cultures with a sensual, organic, creative subversiveness. Czechoslovakia has produced Vera Chytilova & Jan Svankmayer - 2 of my favorite filmmakers. Hungary produced the founder of Neoism, Monty Cantsin (Istvan Kantor), & Yugoslavia produced another favorite filmmaker, Dusan Makavajev, & the composer here, Dubravko Detoni.

I've only heard 12 pieces by Detoni. The ensemble that he's the founder & director of, "Acezantez", strikes me as every bit as remarkable as the group of players that Stockhausen surrounded himself by. As such, it seems important to list the members:

Giovanni Cavallin: recorders, clarinets, saxophone

Dubravko Detoni: piano, harpsichord, celesta

Fred Dosek: electric organ, celesta, glocknspiel

Veronika Durbesic: voice

Daniel Thune: viola, double bass, tuba

Listening to the music by this group & by the other musicians who play Detoni's work I'm amazed at how organic it sounds, at how much it's live Musique Concrete, at how much the individual instrumental qualities are subsumed into a whole. Detoni comes close to being a red-numbered composer on my "Top 100 Composers" list but doesn't quite make it because I didn't hear his music until 1986, over a decade after my exposure to more formatively influential composers such as John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen & Iannis Xenakis, so I was a bit more jaded by then - AND because I still haven't heard enough. That said, I highly recommend his music & the astonishing Acezantez.
