2022. 2021, Under Scrutiny
I have a friend in Brazil that I interact with on a sporadic basis mainly via WhatsApp. In January, 2022, she was considerably more distressed than usual. At the same time that she was communicating this distress to me I received an ad from Google Photos via my phone promoting their business of making books out of people's photos. I was inspired to make a book of images from 2021 to send to my distressed friend as a way of trying to make her feel better. I was hoping to be able to get it to her in 3 weeks but figured it was more realistic that it might take a month. As it turned out, it took something like 5 weeks. Fortunately, by that time, her condition had improved considerably so as a 'cheerer-upper' my present was belated.
Most of my 2021 had been busy with building an addition to my house so that I could expand my (M)Usic Rm. I'd heavily documented this process in the following 8 movies:

As if that weren't enough!, I then took 998 stills off of "Consciousness Expansion" (in addition to the many hundreds of stills I'd already taken off the previous movies) & made a website from them (uploaded on February 24, 2022) that had to be split into TWO websites because the quantity of images was too much for the old website app that I use.
But before this website had been made I'd culled from the images as one of the main sources for "2021, Under Scrutiny". Hence the above-shown cover image, which is reiterated as the 1st page on the inside, is from those stills as are 15 of the total of 62 images. Everything is arranged around a 'skeleton' of chronological order. Most, but not all, of the images are from movies that I'd made in 2021. There's one from "Comedy":

The image to the right is a sign on the door of a diner that's resisting the QUARANTYRANNY at great legal expense to the owners. In the usual misinformation spin against them they've been depicted as racists since a part of the character assassination campaign against anyone who resists the QUARANTYRANNY is to call them neonazis & suchlike - obviously without any concern for the truth whatsoever. The leftmost image below is of me giving a piece I made as a present for them to the manager.
The image to the right above is of 2 of the rubber-stamps that're on the 8.5X14" cardstock present that the manager is shown holding . These rubber-stamps are largely dedicated to criticisms of the process of Medicalization that I think does more harm than good, that I think is actually an inhumane technological juggernaut fueled by completely souless greed.

Some of a diner were chosen especially to entertain my Brazilian friend who has an interest in such things. 3 of them didn't originate with me. These penultimate 2 images had been sent to me by my Brazilian friend:
They show a beach near where she lives on the left & a Brazilian sign with a bad translation that we both found funny on the right. The image on the left was chosen as a positive image of nature-as-paradise, the one on the right was chosen as a symbol of the subtext top-down dogma against experiencing such paradises.
All in all, I rather love this book & think it would make a great photography book to represent 2021 to more people on a mass scale. Alas, I doubt that anyone other than myself will ever publish it & this 1st edition is only in an edition of 2 because of the exorbitant expense of making them through Google Photos.
