Top 100 Composers: Ana-Maria Avram
I feel fortunate to have even found ONE record with pieces on it by Avram on the Roumanian "electrecord" label. Those 2 pieces & 2 more on an Edition Modern CD (ED.MN.1018), separated by 15 years, are all I've heard by her. Ah., no, I correct that, I just found another piece on tape: 5 pieces total. One of the things I like about her work is how much she changed in those 15 years.
Ana-Maria Avram & I were connected on Linked-In, the business-like social media that I admit to not taking very seriously, partially because I'm not looking for a job, but which I find interesting partially because people that I wouldn't expect to find there are there. Like myself, like Avram. I recently learned that she died on August 1, 2017. That surprised & saddened me. I would've liked to've gotten to know her better. I was further surprised to learn that she was 8 years younger than me.
Learning that she'd died, I looked at a movie of her conducting a piece of hers featuring Tim Hodgkinson as a soloist. I was astounded by her conducting technique. Most conductors that I've seen keep their flair very controlled, Avram's flair was pronounced to a phenomenal degree. I loved it.
