Top 100 Composers: Carlos Chavez
Ok, I admit, this whole process of trying to pick composers has gotten ridiculous. I look through my 5 or 6 thousand recordings & pick out people whose work I want to revisit. SO, I listen to work by Alberto Ginastera & I like it but it's too programmatic for me & not quite strange enough so I reject it. Then I listen to Chavez & he's a generation earlier than Ginastera so I prefer the Chavez when it has similar qualitites to the Ginastera because the Chavez seems more pioneering.
Nonetheless, I listen to all 6 of Chavez's symphonies & I like them but it's really only the "Sinfonia di Antigona" that strongly impresses me & I'm somewhat indifferent to the last 4. I already know that I like his "Toccata for percussion" so that's a plus. Then I listen to his "Polygons" piano solo from 1923 & I'm impressed by its modernism so that clinches it. In the meantime, I've rejected Roldan, Caturla, & Ginastera but I'm not totally convinced that they're not equally deserving of being listed here. A big part of it is probably just that I have more recordings by Chavez so I've had more opportunity to be pleasantly inundated by them. That doesn't seem like much of a recommendation does it? &, yet, of course I like Chavez's work. - November 11, 2017 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
