Top 100 Composers: David Dunn
Does David Dunn really 'belong here'?! Not, maybe, in the sense of being a composer who's been extremely important to me. He's more someone that I've filed away in the back of my mind (where? in the visual cortex?) as being of possible interest because he does environmentally related work. I know that my friends Michael Pestel & Warren Burt seem to have high regard for him. Anyway, I do have a fair amount of recordings of his work & I do find some of them interesting (especially the ones that don't satisfy (m)any 'normal' musical criteria) while I find the more straight-forward electronic works to border on generic.
Nonetheless, I know that there are explanations for many or most of the pieces that I'd find exciting that I've either forgotten or never knew. E.G.: "Mimus Polyglottos" involves a device conceived of by Dunn that either generates sound for a Mockingbird to imitate or imitates a Mockingbird or something else along those lines. That's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. Then again, "Autonomous Systems": "autonomous sound generating systems based upon complexity theory and principles of self-organization" (to quote Dunn's website: www.davidddunn/~david/Bio.htm ) is the sort of thing that's almost become repulsive to me in its 'obviousness'. - November 12, 2017 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
