Top 100 Composers: Tim Hodgkinson
So far, there's only one other rock music composer in this list: the obvious choice: Frank Zappa. As with jazz, I often tend to like the overall gestalt of rock music more than the specific compositions. Zappa goes way beyond most rock songwriters in making his work complex & original. Songwriters in general are a difficult lot for me to be impressed by because there's not usually much more to songs, especially in popular genres, than simple chord progressions in monotonously metered time with a diatonic melody. The lyrics are usually the most important thing.
Hodginkinson was in the band Henry Cow, one of the British bands that convinced me that Britain's pop music was generally more adventurous & creative than its classical music. He also played with Slapp Happy, Art Bears, & The Work - all very interesting bands.
SO, in 1994 when I was moving away from BalTimOre, my birthplace, for adventures in the great beyond, I was delighted to trade an electric organ & an electric piano to Jason Willet, of Megaphone Records, for many of the CDs he published - which included Hodgkinson's recently released "Each in Our Own Thoughts", a selection of some of his recent, at the time, compositions. Jason also gave me 2 CDs with Hodgkinson improvising on them: "Live Improvisations" (1990 - with Fred Frith) & "The Goose" (1992 with Valentina Ponomareva & Ken Hyder). Some track info of those CDs is also included in the list below. His inclusion in this list of "Top 100 Composers" is largely based on how much I liked that CD. - November 8, 2017 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
