Top 100 Composers: Minoru Miki
Miki is a composer whose work I learned about by browsing at my local library, a place with an astonishingly good music department. The works listed below are from Miki CDs entitled "Selected Works II" & "Selected Works IV" & constitute the only work by him that I've heeard. It's more than enough. I've listened to a substantial amount of Japanese music but still can't make any claim to be an 'expert' on it. Miki's music is powerfully dramatic in much the same way that the considerably more ancient Gagaku is without necessarily otherwise sounding like Gagaku. To quote from the liner notes to the 1st piece of the "II" CD:
"CONCERTO REQUIEM FOR TWENTY-STRING KOTO AND JAPANESE INSTRUMENTS
"Miki is not concerned with any particular form of religion, but this piece investigates the connection between music and religion. It is a prayer for the repose of the dead, and for the consolation of the living; and it is the living who are confronted with the fact of death.
"An ordinary stone becomes a percussion instrument: it mediates between the earth, to which we all return when we die, and the instrumental ensemble which is part of our sophisticated culture. Miki considers this to be one of his most important works, in spite of its extreeme simplicity. The austerity conveys Miki's disquiet at the twisted complexity of modern civilization." - tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE; November 7, 2017E.V.
