Top 100 Composers: Maurice Ohana
There are certain composers whose work I researched with passion because I recognized that their concerns were what I identified with the most: Cage, Stockhausen, & Xenakis being 3 of the most obvious. Ohana is one of those composers whose work I only managed to hear in dribs & drabs - partially because I only get recordings in the ways I can afford so I'm not likely to buy all available recordings online (which wouldn't have been an option for most of my life so far as a recording collector anyway).
Many composers are associated with specific compositional philosophies: Minimalism, Serialism, Romanticism, Aleatoric, whatever. Therefore, if one likes aleatoric music, e.g., which I do, one is likely to like most of the music associated with it. Ohana never struck me as a composer affiliated with any movement, he just seems like someone who composes music. Maybe music critics pigeonhole his work somehow & I haven't noticed. What I have noticed is that his music is very rich, that it's complex, that the tone-colors frequently please me. Despite my having listened to it for several decades I still don't know it well at all. It's escaped oversimplifying. I suspect that I can listen to it until I die without getting bored by thinking that I finally 'get it'. - November 7, 2017 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
