Top 100 Composers: Silvestre Revueltas
I don't even know where to begin to discuss Revueltas's music. I've only learned about him in the last 5 years or so as far as I can remember. I find the orchestrations extremely invigorating. Liner notes discussing his work say such things as "the world must have been sheer hell for Revueltas" but he "did not return from hell with empty hands." The music is sometimes discussed as if it's astoundingly weird but I find the orchestrations to be absolutely wonderful, beautifully detailed & full of tiny surprises & there are few, if any, dull moments.
The 1st piece I recall hearing by him was his "Ocho por Radio", translated as "Eight Musicians Broadcasting" & written in the list below as "Ocho X Radio". In the liner notes to the "Spanish and Latin-American Music for unusual instrumental combinations" record that has the piece it's written:
"In it, we find a phantasmagoric aural vuew of Mexican radio musicas heard perhaps on a slightly defective set with with a great deal of station-to-station interference. There is a snatch here of a popular rancha, a bit there of a raucous tipica, a hint of a tango and a rhumba or two, all mingling and blending wildly, each finding different planes on which to momentarily exist before shifting to another."
I love it! Unfortunately, I don't think I hear it as much as the lurid description suggests that I should. I wish it would go further. Nonetheless, "Ocho X Radio" is one of my favorite pieces by Revueltas.
Of course, it helps that he "fought for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War", as did Conlon Narncarrow. Alas, after he returned from that he "returned to Mexico where he drifted in and out of mental hospitals; lived poor and died young" - at age 40 from alcoholism. Those quotes are taken from the liner notes for a CD collection of his work called "The Night of the Mayas". I recommend it. - November 7, 2017 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
