Top 100 Composers: Ivan Wyschnegradsky
I know entirely too little about Wyschnegradsky. I probably either copied the few recordings I have from Warren Burt's archive in 2000 or Florian Cramer's archive in 1994 (or 1997? or 2004?). The work is taken from 2 records: "Ivan Wyschnegradsky - Vierteltonmusik" (Edition Block 107/8) & "Music for 3 Pianos in 6ths of Tones" (McGill University Records - Stereo 83017). From these, I created a retrospective tape of his music that I entitled "Microtonal Piano (& Cello) Music - 1918-1974". I'm interested in all composers who work microtonally which includes, but is not excluded to, Charles Ives, Alois Hába, Mildred Couper, Harry Partch, Julian Carrillo, Teo Macero, Ezra Sims, Tui Saint George Tucker, myself (tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE - you can hear my paltry microtonal output here: https://archive.org/details/A1994.12Seq42Fixed16s_201503 ), & many others.
After I decided to include Hába in the "Top 100 Composers" list it seemed important to give other microtonalists a relisten. I only have one recording of Carrillo's music & it's a piece for a pope so he got scratched; I only have one microtonal piece by Macero & I think of him as more of a producer so he got scratched; I have a CD of poorly recorded work by Couper & it's ok but not that exciting to me so she got scratched; etc, etc. I rediscovered that I liked Wyschnegradsky, I found the music to be more varied than I expected considering his limited preponderance of prefabricated forms such as "Préludes", "Études", & "Fugues". - tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE; November 29, 2017E.V.
