1981.05.29-06.07 81 APT - BalTimOre
- tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
This was the 1st festival of any kind & the 1st International Neoist Apartment Festival that I (co)orgaized & the 1st one in the US@. Kirby Malone of the Merzaum Collective & Desire Productions had suggested that he & I coorganize it but nothing really came of that - probably because of my desire to organize it on my own. Kirby may've paid for photocopying 100 of the 11X17" posters I dsigned. Furthermore, some of the main people of the Merzaum Collective participated so in that sense it was a collaboration. Those people were Kirby, Marshall Reese, Chris Mason (in The Tinklers), &, possibly, Mitchell Pressman. Since I was the organizer, I didn't 'perform', I spent most of my time on logistics. I showed my "Computer Interview" (1977 - made with Steve Estes) vaudeo
81 APT was held more or less entirely in the 24 room mansion I was living in with other members of the Krononautic Organism. Ostensibly, this was, therefore, a collaboration with the Krononauts. Unfortunately, the bulk of the Krononauts were hostile to the festival so the environment was unsupportive. All of the Neoists who were invited from Montréal except for Monty Cantsin (Istvan Kantor) didn't come. Monty brought the poet Tom Konyves with him to help with his English.
I didn't have my own movie cameras at the time so what little visual documentation there is is VHS from Lizard Media Systems & some super-8mm shot by various people. VHS camcroders were very new at the time so it was special to have access to one.
N.E.M.B. (Non Erotic Male Bonding) was for this occasion an improvising noise duet consisting of Ricki Kilreagan & Some Queer. N.E.M.B. later became more of a pop band.
Marshall Reese's "Microsongs" was a performance about Africa that used silhouettes.
Kiki Bonbon sent threatening letters to BalTimOre participants using a Tiger Balm lid as the cancellation stamp to a fake postal permit. He didn't attend in person.
Monty Cantsin's performance involved taking his own blood & putting the test-tube in his ass & contorting in such a way that he drank his own blood from the tube. This was done in the light of a car's headlights on the front lawn of our house across from a bus-stop at a shopping mall. My Krononautic roommates were horrified.
That's Joan Lobell on the left, Chris Mason in the middle, & Richard Rtyzno Elleberry on the right. This is a still from a super-8mm film, probably shot by Mannette Letter (Bonnie Bonnell). This was across the street from the abandoned Musical Sales warehouse that I had the key to. The warehouse was where David Zack was to hold his "Alien Dialects Workshop". 5 of us were there with David but he didn't seemto have the slightest idea of what to say so the attendees spun off into a sort of sound poetry improv.
Steve Pocock wasn't from Zaire, he was from BalTimOre. He requested the Zaire origin.
The bext 2 photos are of me socializing at Dava Presslor's apartment during the festival. She & Monty were hooking up at the time. She was a photographer so she took these 2 shots.
