1993. A Mere Outline for One Aspect of a Book on Mystery Catalysts, Guerrilla Playfare, booed usic, Mad Scientist Didactions, Acts of As-Beenism, So-Called Whatevers, Psychopathfinding, etc..
I originally made this book to send to a Cleveland Performance Art Festival that I was interested in participating in. I thought it was pretty impressive. As I recall, I got a form letter reply that showed no sign of their having looked at it. This reminded me that the Art World is more bureaucratic than it is personal.
The front cover photo was taken by John Porter during my Mad Scientist Didaction at The Funnel in Toronto on April 24, 1986. For an entire book of John's documentation of underground film scenes see 2016. John Porter's CineScenes: Documentary Portraits of Alternative Film Scenes - Toronto and Beyond - 1978-2015 .
Over the ensuing years I made at least one more revised hard-copy edition of the book until I switched to putting it online. That's now up to its "zillionth" edition which I keep somewhat up-to-date (albeit sporadically): http://idioideo.pleintekst.nl/MereOutlineIndex.html .
As a 'performer' (I prefer less common language) I must be fairly unique insofar as I've performed at least 410 actions in roughly 56 years in the us@, CacaNada, Ungland, Scotchland, GermMany, Hungery, Malaise-ia, OZtraliya, & sPAIN but've only been mentioned in passing in 2 performance books that I know of: 1991. Performance Au/In Canada 1970-1990 & 1993. On Edge - Performance at the End of the Twentieth Century - both extremely minimal references being in relation to the same festival in NYC in 1988. Was it something I said?
The lesson to be learned here is that if you use 'performance' as a tool for anything other than an Art World Career you can probably kiss the interest level of most documenters of such work goodbye. What they seem to want is ARTISTS situating themselves firmly in THE ART WORLD where they belong & NOT polymaths using language like Psychopathfinder.
Rating: really liked it
Bookshelves: author-tentatively-a-convenience, read, working-class-intellectuals
Format: paperback
Recommended For: all performers & blatant perverts
Reviewing myself again. If I'd had a big budget for this, I cd've made it so flashy that it wd burn the memory of someone like Laurie Anderson permanently out of yr mind. Instead, it's an.. unassuming.. bk. Given that I wrote it, & that the actions described w/in are ones I generated, I obviously think this is worth reading or I wdn't have compiled it now wd I have? I won't get any more egomaniacal than that here but if you want to hear me talk about how mind-bogglingly great my So-Called Whatevers have been just give me a call & I'll talk until one of us turns blue. Unless I'm busy otherwise. Wch I usually am.
