1980.03.29-30 Balti-Media Edition & Science Fair - Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore
- tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
I've known Doug Retzler since I was 16 & attending Woodlawn Senior High School. Doug was born 5 months later than me so he was in the 10th grade when I was in the 11th. As such, he was either 15 or 16 when I met him. Doug has consistently been one of the most creative people I've ever known. In honor of this I made this documentary about him:
629. "Old Folks at Home: Doug Retzler"

1972-1985, 1988: Doug "Sumu Pretzler" Retzler
Unfortunately, Doug started competing with me as early as 1979 (despite my not competing with him in return) & took an attitude that my work should be suppressed. As such, he's been describing me as a "maniac" for the last 45 years & has repeatedly censored me whenever possible. As such, he sabotaged a maze I made, rejected my group t he booed usicians from an Ad Hoc Fiasco he co-organized, sabotaged 2 different performances for which he'd promised me a large dolly, consistently scheduled me for the end of programs when the audience would long-since be gone, etc. - in other words, the usual curse of the populist imposing a LCD (Lowest Common Denminator).
Nonetheless, Doug was an excellent organizer & the Balti-Media Edition Science Fair is the earliest, & possibly the best, of the events that he organized that I attended & participated in. Somehow Doug convinced people at Johns Hopkins University to allow a motley crew of oddballs to have what was tantamount to a FAKE Science Fair at the reknowned Johns Hopkins University - mostly in the Glass Pavilion. That, alone, was a masterpiece of diplomacy.
Various people designed posters & buttons as advertisements for the Science Fair & it was quite the group effort. The group, if it could be said to have a name, was sometimes called "Balti-Media". This Fair wasn't, strictly speaking, called a 'festival" but it was as much one as other things that were called festivals so I've included it in that category.
