- tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
- text finished August 24, 2025E.V.
In 1977, I lived in the "Musical Sales" warehouse a block away from MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) where many of my friends were students & where I was dramatically underpaid as an artists' model. If the art students were just drawing my head I was paid $2.00 an hour - as if I could just remove my head & walk away & do something else with the rest of my body. The minimum wage went from $2.30 an hour to $2.85 an hour that year. As such, MICA's wage was illegal.
I was sometimes at odds with my art student friends over artistic philosophical & conceptual issues. My rejection of the art context as outmoded for creativity & my preference for time-based practices such as movie-making & 'performance' as well as guerrilla actions & audience participation + my alliance with concept (Henry Flynt) & conceptual (Everybody else) practices were treated with contempt by the conservative picture-makers whose tastes were not that much different from those of the ignorant masses.
Their dismissiveness & contempt was probably at least a little rooted in a belief that THEY would go on to be acclaimed as great artists while I would be left behind in the graveyard of nobodies. However, the percentage of art students who become artists might be as low as 10%. If their standard for what constitutes a 'real' artist involves shows of work in museums then the irony is that I've probably had my work presented in museums more than most of my dismissive friends put together - despite my general lack of interest in the museum context. One might call that Poetic Justice.
SO, here's my list of museun shows that I've been a part of. I include exhibits, 'performances', & screenings. Admittedly, I was a minor participant in some cases (& even a guerrilla one), but, nonethelessm I was there. In other cases, my presence probably contributed to the considerable emboldening of what was 'allowed'. There're 47 museum presentations listed below.
